'Flowing Harmony' in Poway

This landscape design project was for a client in Poway with a very large front yard located in a high fire-risk area. Because of the property's location, the landscape needed to incorporate fire-conscious, low-fuel plantings while still creating a colorful and inviting design.

The clients were drawn to the idea of using multiple decorative rock materials with strategically placed boulders to add texture and visual interest. They also wanted a prominent focal point featuring a decorative urn overflowing with aesthetic plantings.

Their primary goals were a drought-tolerant, low-maintenance landscape that would provide year-round beauty and strong curb appeal.

The final design incorporated mulch-colored crushed stone, silver crushed stone, and a swath of blue chalk sticks groundcover. The sweeping, arcing layout lines combined with the contrasting base materials created a striking composition that complemented the existing curved, newly painted stucco retaining wall along the West side of the property.

Color and texture were introduced through plant selections including verbena, red yucca, lantana, and an assortment of succulents, providing seasonal blooms and architectural contrast. Around the central urn focal point, a circular planting of 'Blue Glow' agaves was accented with ivy geraniums to soften the edges and create a vibrant centerpiece. We also used some earth-toned colored flagstone steppers for access from their main entry to the West side gate.

On the slope, East of the driveway, dymondia was used as the primary groundcover with small groupings of accent plants to provide visual interest while helping stabilize the hillside.

Lastly, two new decorative trees near the street help frame the property, create a sense of enclosure and soften views from the roadway. Carefully placed boulders completed the composition, while the landscape lighting served as the finishing touch.
